A Daughter’s Search

Hi!

My name is Erin, and I’m hoping you might be able to help me get in touch with Tom Dreiling or someone who remembers the early days of SIM500.

I recently came across your podcast’s reference to Tom winning a SIM500 race at Bristol in August 2006, and it immediately caught my attention.

My father, Brian Cogan, operated an online racing platform called SIM500 around that time. His username was MISC, short for Murrells Inlet, South Carolina, where we lived.

My dad was an incredibly intelligent, creative man who loved computers, programming, and building things. SIM500 was one of his many projects, and I remember how much he loved it. He organized races, qualifying events, and competitions with cash prizes. I also remember Dale Earnhardt Jr. being so impressed with the platform that he offered an endorsement.

Unfortunately, my younger brother became seriously ill, and my father had to step away from SIM500 to take care of him. During that time, some things happened with the person he’d entrusted to manage it, and my dad was never really able to get the platform back to what it had been.

My father passed away years ago, and I recently found myself telling stories about his incredible mind and the things he created. That led me to look up SIM500, and I was genuinely surprised and thrilled to discover that a racing league with the same name is still active!

I want to make something very clear: I’m not reaching out because I’m seeking ownership, money, or anything financial related to my father’s involvement. I have absolutely no interest in interfering with what anyone has built or accomplished since then.

I’m simply a daughter who misses her dad, remembers how much he loved something he helped create, and is incredibly happy to see that it may still be part of people’s lives.

I’d love to learn more about SIM500’s history, whether the current league is connected to the one my father ran, and whether anyone remembers Brian Cogan or MISC.

If you could pass this along to Tom or anyone familiar with that era, I would be so grateful.

Thank you so much for your time, and for helping keep this part of online racing history alive!

Erin

Results

NASCAR iRacing Series

Friday Open – NiS – Phoenix

  • Mike- P recked out.

Sunday Open- NiS – Phoenix

  • Tony – P9 im not a fan of phoenix and just survived

Wednesday Open -NiS – Talladega

  • Mike- P wrecked out while leading. I was first on the inside, two guys on the outside were pushing hard. They were gonna get by me. They thought they were clear and both came down, and the guy wasn’t clear at all and basically wrecked the entire field.DNF.
  • Bobby – P worked out early
  • Chris –  P8 Had a shot late but bad bump got me loose. Went from P3 to P11. Was able to rebound on a GWC for a P8. Hit the 4300 iR mark. A career high.
  • David – P5   Speeding on Green Flag stop, the wreck that takes Brad out gives me lucky dog.  I make it up to the front, survived a couple of 4 wides and was pushing the inside at the end.
  • Brad- P 29 I started p5 but would make a mistake on lap two and drift up just a little in T1 and collect the car on the outside. Pretty embarrassing to be honest. Was never able to get the damage fixed but we would run the next 70 laps under green until a car about four ahead of me got turned and when he came back up the track, I was there to keep him from hitting the wall. Not sure if my SR will ever get back above 3.0.
  • Adam- P 2 got to the lead on the white was blocking bottom and top, but they tried to go around him on the outside and ended up P2
  • John – P wrecked early. Started on the pole. Leading on lap 4 when the outside lane made a move. First two cars came down and got in front of me clean, the third guy in line, not so clean. Came down before he was clear and destroyed my car.

Thursday Open -NiS – Talladega

  • Tony – P1 Tonydega is back. New work schedule has Thursday afternoon as my only nis start time for rest of the season. I just survived and had the goal of just surviving. Gwc started 7th and some how on the white the leader wrecked and ths seas parted for me and pulled the Alex Bowman backing into a win card. Thank you Premier for a fun fast set. She wanted to go but lack of sleep and the will to survive said nope wait til the end… also had a 70 lap run believe it with 2 green flag stops well i had 1 hahaha

Official Series

Formula 1600

  • Mike – P7 At Winton. Qualified seventh out of 11  got wrecked, not on my own, from a guy in front of me. Couldn’t miss it. Had to go into the pits and take a fast repair. I then just drove it around and brought it home P7

Ring Meister

  • Mike- P. Street stock  started second, was running third, but wrecked out about halfway on my own. I suck.
    • Then GT3 started 29 out of 30. I had a curb right away and destroyed the car. DNF
    • Then started second, took the lead right away, got pressure from behind at some point in lap two, and basically ran over me going into a corner and dumped me into the wall. DNF

Gen four Grand National

  • Mike – P at Charlotte. Qualified eighth out of 21. I completely destroyed by lap five.
    • Qualified 10th out of 18.

A Open

  • Chris W – P 1. Once I got into the final fuel window I went to the front. Started P5 on a GWC, after some bad moves from others it was down to me and the leader. Got on his quarter panel and side drafted. He put me in the wall but I won by an inch. Literally .000 of a second. Split #1 SOF 4391!
  • David – P1, Just and i worked together, he pushed me to the finish running one of his temps over 300
  • Mike. Dnf. Got the lead pretty quick. Led the most laps. Was in a really good spot. Had enough fuel to make it to the end plus more. was leading and basically got dunked from behind. Somebody not pushing me just right, and I got hooked down to the inside. destroyed while leading
    • Scored pole  position. It was going pretty good. Actually, got a penalty, was in the entire back, made my way back up to the front. I was a lead car on the outside. I see a guy on the inside about five back that can’t hold his lane, it keeps coming up into the upper lane. I even call him out on it before I get there, and as I get side by side with him, sure enough I see him starting to come up again. I go to move up and I actually lose control of my car and spin out and wreck. DNF, too much damage, we’re done.
  • John K. – P11. I was second in the bottom lane on the backstretch of the last lap, second lane was pretty high, so I moved into the new middle coming into the tri oval with the help of spotter Mike Ellis. Coming to the checker, I was ahead of all the cars until two of them hooked on my right side slamming one of them in to me sending me into a spin and  punted me back  to 11th.

Draft master

  • Mike– Gen 4. Qualified sixth out of 21 leader got turned with four to go and wiped out the entire pack. DNF.

League / Hosted Races

Grass Roots Racing

GTP/GT3 League – Montreal Sprint Race

  • Brad W – P10 Started deep in the field and worked my way towards the front. Really tricky track in multi-class racing. Feels like it is all chicanes. Hard to pass unless someone makes a mistake. Glad to finish one.
