WoO Late Models Week 2

The second round of the 2023 iRacing World of Outlaws ButtKicker Late Model Series took to Fairbury Speedway on Monday night, with 2019 series champion Blake Matjoulis scoring his first victory of the season by only a car length ahead of last week’s winner and defending champion Evan Seay. It wasn’t a complete déjà vu moment for Seay, who finished second in a close battle in 2022’s trip to Fairbury. It was, however, the first victory Matjoulis in the series since Kokomo Speedway in 2022, another race where he beat Seay.

Thursday Fixed- New Hampshire

Justin- P33, made it to about half way. i suck again stun out on the out side lane my fault hit just right and junked my car.

Friday Open – New Hamshpire

• Mike -.  P dqd out. Lap 56. I couldn’t miss anything.
• David – p2 top split.  Broadcasted.  Lot of dirty driving in this race.
• Rochette P14 i hate NH and will always hate this track i dont remember what i did that how much this track sucks
• Donnie – P26, This was the worst

Saturday Fixed- Justin -p6, ran with Mr. tom. He always has good strat. took it easy the first half stayed near the back got a 10x with no damage so that was disappointing. I did spin out on the outside i do that at least once a race Just stayed in it to the end cycled to the front. 5 lap run went from p9 to p6

Sunday Open

• Hall – p wrecked.  Dumped on lap 1, car sucked from that point on.  Then caught up in someone else recovering from avoiding a wreck.
• Donnie – P9

Wednesday Open: Pocono

• Mike- p 17- what is run in fourth on the final green white checker got dive, bombed in taken out and moved to the rear of the pack. 
• David – p wrecked on lap seven on the damn straight.  Over drove trying to get back and self spun the car. I’m done driving people clean
• Justin – p dont know , ran top 10 the whole race 6 to go a car came across mikes nose then spun up and got me. Race Over
• Chris – P18 – We have a new 7 week old baby racer at home. Not getting much seat time and it shows. 
• Stephen louallen- wrecked out
• Tom -p18
• Tyler – P27- Caught in a wreck on lap one as the dive bombing began early. Regrouped and fixed the car. Had a great set as the team made a few adjustments. Shout out to Kyle on the main set and Joe with the in race adjustments. Car was wicked fast and fun to drive. Contact possibly a net code on white to put my top 15 car back in 27th. Frustrated with the result but just glad to be fast. 

Thursday Open  

• David – p 15 top split up and down race, fell to the back early cause of a series of 3 wrecks that didn’t bring out a caution.  I slowed, most didn’t and a guy turned across my nose.  Later trying to work way back up, another multi accident situation, 3 or the 4 wrecks don’t bring out a caution.  I don’t back out, fail to miss, but not severe damage, stay out, gain a lot of track position over other hurt cars, and finish 15th.
• Mike – was running bit with 12 to go. They beat getting on pit row that I can’t decide and I hit the barrels for minutes damage.

Rochette P16 been awhile.since i raced on a thursday. Unlike my dominate win last year in the Dorito shaped track today i was getting slammed bammed and shammed whole race. Was running 9th on thr white when guys wanted to wreck on the back and i got ran over

Friday Open – Atlanta

• Mike –.  P 19- just no luck with missing the racks and I ran out of incident points with about five to go and how to do a pass through penalty.

Wednesday Open: New Hampshire

• • Mike- p P 18 after a drive through penalty near the end after spinning on my own and getting five minutes damage

• David – p Disconnect, was running 24th as car 32, so mediocre speed.  Never lost TS when I got dropped
• Kyle- P3 Car 24 started P5 and just held myself in the top 5, but got as high as 2nd on 2 different occasions. Pitted off sequence to try and gain a grip advantage. Worked my way back from 11th after pitting. Had a sniff at the lead on the 2nd GWC when the leader drove in too deep into turn one, but he was able to throttle out of the corner and keep the lead. Had one small swipe during a wreck around midway, that gave me my only 4x of the night and after surviving 22 cautions and 88 caution laps to come home with a P3 and only a 4x is the next best thing. A podium is a win in my book.
• Justin – p33 wrecked out rage quit had to leave seen cars wreck checked up and the guy spinning out didnt hold his brakes. Junked my car  
• Chris – P13. Race was filled with cautions and sloppy racing. Played the survival approach to finish 13th.

Thursday Open  

• David – p21, top split, more of the same crap, caught up in someones mess on lap 17.  Spend all race down a lap or two including getting dumped while in the lucky dog position by a divebomber.  Got lap back with 7 to go and gained 4 spots

Ellis– 

• Fiat f4 at Watkins glen start a 12 foot actually went off track on lap 4 and wrecked hard.

A Open

Kyle –  P12 Used this race on Tuesday to shake down the setup and get a feel for the track and the grip level. Race was going well, holding a top 5 for the majority of the race. Car felt strong and planted but other drivers weren’t so planted and kinda ruined my race, giving me 3 minutes of damage and clocking my wheel far left. Limped it home to a P12.

Porsche Series Qualifying Announced

The first step of the journey kicks off on July 22, as the Porsche TAG Heuer Esports Supercup Qualifying Series kicks off with six weeks of wheel-to-wheel action in the Porsche 911 GT3 Cup car. Mike- p 12 – was running 12 with my teammate on the outside with the leader on the inside got loose and wiped out everybody but Justin. I went on with damage. It was able to cross the line P4, but I got an incident from a wreck behind me crossing the line with a black flag so that put me back to P 12.

Justin – p30 my fault at the end disqualified out.
Chris – Just minding my own business last night and got clipped on lap 29. Looked like he was dive bombing to the pits. Dnf w 8 minutes damage. Did Xfinity open right after NiS and finished P5 .188 behind the leader.

Thursday Open
Ellis -P18- was running second with Ford ago and got too many incidents. Drive through penalty finished P 18.
David – p2 cut a guy a break that passed on the apron, then was gonna get a good push one the out side for a shot, but my pusher got wrecked. Still will take top 2 in top split with the luck i’ve had.
Mackenzie – p2 started 4th led 23 laps, was leading for green flag pit stops and entered the pits too fast, dropped down to 14th down a lap and was lucky to be able to form a line, got my lap back with 10 to go and was p9, made my way up to 7th for one last restart with 2 to go managed to make my way through a wreck on turn 4 to get the p2

Ellis-
Daytona prototypes at Talladega, was running up front in the PAC near the end. Second on the bottom I pulled up and created a new middle. The guy in the outside middle didn’t realize it hit me, and everyone got wrecked.
Ring, Meister Toyota, GR 86 at the Nord. Went from 15th the fifth, then hit the wall in Felton ninth, then hit the wall and crashed out halfway DNF.
A open at Atlanta led the most laps and won the race by 1/1000 of a second by 94 career win
We go to run it again and back it up and we do and we win for our 95th career win. Led the most laps. Justin came in at the end to do some spotting and help me pick the right lanes to go at the end. Well done.

• Mike -.  P 16- green flag race the whole way no cautions.  Ran as high as second ended up doing it two stop race I actually blew my tire while hitting the second time.  
• Rochette- P4 car number between the father son duo that there them Spiker Boyz. Qualified crap, just moseyed my way to the front. Almost had 2nd as 2nd and 3rd wrecked eachother just before the checkered and they slid across line just a hair before i did 
•  Justin – p  3
• David – P 13  pinballed around again and couldn’t ever get track position back

Sunday Open

• David – P. 11 Top Split, avoid 2 big wrecks

Sunday Fixed 

• Mike – p 24. I was running pretty good about mid back. I got hit down to the grass sent to the back and never really recovered.  
• Stephen- wrecked out.

Wednesday Open: Chicago. 

• Mike- p  7- started 17th. They piled up and turned one and I went to the inside. I got up to P 10 by the end of last one pretty much stayed there the whole race I paid it for fuel when the window opened I didn’t think I took enough fuel I panicked the car stopped. I had to restart it, and I had a long stop.  Eventually cycle back to p7!! I will take it.

• David – p wreacked out, running good, wall isn’t forgiving

Thursday Open  Ellis -P12-  qualify 15th of 33 in top split. Got to 14 by the end of lap one ended up spinning by myself in the ashes on lap two fell back to 25th eventually recovered to finish P 12.

TeamSpeak Loses PTT

A Teamspeak user discovered rather abruptly that their programmed HOTAS “push-to-talk” configurations were completely blown away when updating to 3.6. They have many types of controllers and the only key bindings that work are the keyboard and the mouse. NO onther usb controller of any type works! It also destroyed all the whisper commands linked to HOTAS buttons.

Wednesday Open: Nashville superspeedway

• Mike- p 9- I had a pretty good run going, but when we got into a long green flag run faded from as high as third down to 12 when the cycle started eventually it’s cycled I was 14 when the Caution came out.  Short runs from here. I was able to work myself up to pee nine  
• Tom D – p drive-through penalty went one lap down had a 16 second stop and go. 
• David – p 12 but would have been top 10 if people knew what to do when they’re in the grass.
• Tyler- P got wrecked a couple times, but finish the race 
• Justin – P really fast on the long run. I got wrecked closer to the end. Put me in the in me around 8th i think 4 laps to go on the restart i missed a shift 100 percent my fault i suck

Thursday Open  

• Ellis -Pwrecked out. I was running along as seventh about lab 20 and in front of me. They went three wide, and couldn’t figure it out and rec the entire field.  Eight minutes required two minutes optional knock the whole left front wheel off.

Willow Springs proved to be an excellent testbed for a rebooted foliage system that we’ve been working on for several months now. The variety of plants and grasses really put this system to the test and let us find the limits of the system as well as a balance between aesthetics and performance

I shared some of this info elsewhere, but folks here might appreciate some insight into this project if you didn’t happen to see it.

Willow Springs was a challenging yet fun project for our team. Due to the unique characteristics of the landscape, the track couldn’t have been recreated to the quality we wanted with our existing shaders. There’s just such variety there… sandy patches of ground, areas where there’s a bit more gravelly sand, some red clay, a variety of grasses, rocky bits, and soil that’s been eroded away. This really pushed our team to innovate and work with engineering to advance our rendering engine and tooling pipeline. While we’ve been using multi-material shaders for some time now (these let us blend one texture with another in an advanced depth-based way), we realized we needed twice as many layers to get an adequate appearance.

Willow also proved to be an excellent testbed for a rebooted foliage system that we’ve been working on for several months now. The variety of plants and grasses really put this system to the test and let us find the limits of the system as well as a balance between aesthetics and performance. Just like with the textures, the requirements of this track really demanded this new feature and improvement to do it justice, so we were happy to debut it here.

We have also been long dissatisfied with our off-track ground appearance, which is what we call the “terrain”. What I mean by that is the ground outside the track walls that you don’t drive on. We have tried new approaches over the last couple of seasons and made some incremental improvements, but nothing revolutionary. For Willow, getting nearby terrain and roads to blend in with the track, given that there are often not even walls, was really important. We put one of our most technical artists on the task and paired him up with a lead rendering engineer. They overhauled the whole process, from the modeling and texture application to the mapping and blending. What we ended up with is a shader that stands up to close scrutiny and gets us close to visual parity between the bits you drive on, and the bits you don’t. This will be great for camera placement, replays, and for the broadcast team, who will be able to show more of the scene than in the past.

Unrelated to Willow but also of interest when it comes to the upcoming June build: our tree implementation received a complete overhaul fixing significant lighting and shading issues present in the former model.

Our whole team contributed towards this result, from our multi-decade veterans to our amazing new hires who have brought so much energy to the company. This work will pay dividends at all new tracks going forward, and older tracks we revisit. There are also many more tooling, pipeline, and rendering improvements in the works for the future, including some near-term enhancements to the sky and horizon model that will be ready soon.

Friday Open – Charlotte

• Mike -.  P10. The race took four hours and 45 minutes 19 cautions most of them happened in the last hundred laps   Was involved in an early Caution, which took out Justin only had a minute and a half damage. At one point through the middle of the race, I cycled to the lead but pretty much ran top five.  Was running really good near the end as high as third where the guy forced me to the grass which gave me over the incident limit so I had to do a drive-through penalty.  The guy ended up wrecking the leader to win as well. What a loser.   I told him don’t be proud of that win. 
• Rochette- P15 started super loose ended up short pitting twice and ended up 3 laps down with a 178 lap run eventually got it stable and ended up just a lal down
• David – P wrecked out, self spin into inside wall, took no one with me and kept it from bouncing.

Sunday Open

• Rochette -DNF so started 3rd but leader blinked out right before GF so got to start the race, led some laps and car passed me and was right behind him as he slowed up in a corner got in his rear and wrecked us both. Ugghhhh

Mike- p 17 – had a good run going till about lab 30 and got sideswiped by a guy in over four minutes damage got most of it fixed. It was about 40 to go to my last of the tires. I kept getting involved in different incidents and just had to survive.

MacKenzie- P7 – started 10th, ran about 10 laps then on the caution my vr went funny and I was looking out the side of the car, I pulled to the side to stay out of the way and got sent to the back for driving onto pit road exit. On the restart the car that was supposed to pass me was no where to be seen so I got a black flag penalty and had to hold for 50 seconds, luckily a caution came out as I was doing that so I only went 2 laps down, fought my way back and started p6 on the gwc but couldnt do anything with it. The only x’s i got were 1x for off track when my vr went funny and a 4x when someone ran into me from behind while pacing 

David – p13 mid pack car

Kyle P P4 after a long break and silently been doing a few races lately. I Had a YoYo race. Started outside pole and stayed there until about lap 30 and my tires were junk and nosed the outside wall and just fell back. After a mid race caution I pitted for tires and repairs. And just Went back and forth through the teens and 20’s after a final repair and new tires with about 20 to go I made my march to the front. After a late race caution with 12 to go I went in for my last set of tires and away I went. Restarted 8th and just didn’t let anyone get near me. Made some bold moves for position and was able to bring home a P4. Felt good to get a good NIS Finish as my last several races have been junk. 

Thursday Open  

• Ellis -P got pole position. They did pretty quick on the short run. Made it to the second set of tires by the time they got old I was sliding around and spun myself down to the inner wall and smashed the left front hard and couldn’t steer it.

• Trucks at Talladega was leading on the way coming to the check her out at four and got turned by the guy behind me. 
• GEN four at Michigan start a 21st finished P3.

Mackenzie

Ran 2 late model races started 10th in one and 5th in the other. Finished both races 3rd with no incident points gained .73 safety rating and 119 irating between the 2 races, I love running this car
